My First Day at Preparatory School
I will never forget my first day at preparatory school. It was a cold morning in September, and I was only twelve. My mother’s car stopped in front of a huge building, and my heart started beating fast.
In the yard, I didn’t know anybody. Then a tall girl with glasses came and shook my hand. “Hi, I’m Sana. Is this your timetable? Mine is the same!” she said. We went to our classroom together. The maths teacher, Mr Ferchichi, looked severe, but he told us a funny story and everybody laughed.
At lunchtime, I lost my bag. I looked for it everywhere and I almost cried. Finally, Sana found it under a bench in the playground. “You have to be more careful,” she laughed. “Don’t worry, I’ll help you!” In the afternoon, I found the way to the library alone, and I was so proud of myself.
That was three years ago. Sana is still my best friend, and next year we are going to study in the same secondary school. We intend to become doctors one day.

After handing in your paper: practise the writing task (it is not part of the mark out of 20).
Writing: an email about a school memory
writing and self-assessmentYour e-friend Tom, from Canada, asks you about your school.
Task: write him an email of 8 to 10 lines. Tell him about an important day at school (what happened, who you met, how you felt) and say what you are going to do next year.
Steps
- I read the task and underline: who I write to, the topic, the length, the type of text.
- I list my ideas, then I put them in order: introduction, two or three points, conclusion.
- I write my draft with linking words (first, then, because, while, so, finally).
- I check with the checklist: grammar of the module, spelling, capital letters, full stops.
I assess my text: I tick each criterion I have met
A model text to compare with (after writing mine)
Hi Tom,
Thanks for your email! You asked me about my school, so I want to tell you about the day of our science fair last spring. My friend Hedi and I made a small water filter with sand, stones and a plastic bottle. On the morning of the fair, I was very nervous, because the headmaster and two inspectors came to see our project. Hedi explained how the filter works, and I poured dirty water into it. Clean water came out, and everybody clapped! We won the second prize. I was really proud of myself. Next year, I am going to study at the secondary school in our town, and I am going to join the science club. What about you?
Write soon,
Aziz
One good example among many: compare, don’t copy.
